Half-life 2 episode 3 was originally the plan for valve and it was to be released quite soon after ep 2, but valve over the time of ep 2's release to somewhere after left 4 dead 2 supposedly trashed episode 3 and are now working on/finished Half life 3. Keep in mind this is all highly likely theory the community has gathered over almost 6 years
